Two of the flattest, sleekest chain styles men wear, and two very different structures under the shine. Here's how to tell them apart.
Herringbone chains are made from flat, V-shaped links woven tightly together so the chain lies flush against the skin, almost like a continuous band of metal. The name comes from the zigzag pattern itself, the same weave found in herringbone fabric. The style had a strong run in men's jewelry through the 1970s to 1990s, often worn thick and flat as a standalone piece.
Snake chains are built from small, tightly interlocking metal segments that curve and flex smoothly like a snake's body. Unlike herringbone's flat weave, a snake chain has no visible individual links from a normal viewing distance; it reads as one continuous cord rather than a woven pattern. Snake chains come in a few cross-section shapes, flat, square, or rounded, with the rounded version giving the smoothest, most cord-like feel of the three.
The trade-off for that flat, close-to-skin profile is a different shape language than a round-link chain like cuban or figaro. Herringbone sits as a wide, continuous band with a bold, uninterrupted shine; snake chain sits as the thinnest, most fluid line a metal chain can form. Both move with the body rather than sitting rigid, which is part of what makes them read as sleeker and more modern than a heavier link chain.
Both styles work best worn close to the neck rather than as a loose, statement-length piece. Herringbone reads slightly bolder due to its wider, flatter profile; snake chain reads more understated, closer to a fine cord than a visible chain. Either pairs well with a pendant, since the smooth surface doesn't compete visually with a hanging piece the way a textured link chain can.
