Quality checks aside, where you actually buy fine jewelry changes what you're trading off: price, customization, return policy, and how much you can inspect before you commit.
Long-established gold retailers typically sell high-purity gold (often 24K), priced largely by weight, with in-person inspection before purchase. Strong for traditional or investment-grade pieces, and for bridal or gifting where 24K's deep color and weight read as ceremonial.
Weaker fit for daily wear: 24K is soft, scratches and dents more easily, and its strong yellow tone is harder to wear subtly than 18K or 14K. That's why most everyday pieces use lower-karat gold instead.
Global brands sold through department stores or boutiques offer brand recognition and in-person try-on, generally at a significant markup for the name itself. Quality tends to be reliable, but a meaningful share of the price goes to the brand and retail overhead rather than the precious metal.
A newer category: brands selling jewelry directly online without retail markup, usually cheaper than boutiques or heritage houses.
Not every DTC brand backs that lower price with solid metal, some cut quality to hit it, so the checks below matter more here than anywhere else. You also can't try the piece on first, so return policy and sizing accuracy matter as much as the metal.

If nothing off-the-shelf fits, bespoke removes the constraint entirely: material, karat, design, and sizing built around you. It costs more and takes longer than buying ready-made. Right for an exact fit or one-of-a-kind design, not for everyday buying.
Regardless of channel, the fundamentals don't change:
For the fuller checklist, see how to know if a jewelry brand is legit. For whether the higher cost of fine jewelry pays off over time, see is fine jewelry worth it.
AURÉV was built specifically to close that gap: solid metal quality without the markup that comes from a storefront or a brand name, and without the corner-cutting some DTC brands use to hit a lower price.
Every piece is solid 18K or 14K gold, or sterling silver, never plated, hallmarked, with select pieces XRF-tested for purity. Metals are recycled where possible, and pricing is shown against current metal value, not an unexplained markup. Platinum is available through bespoke commissions for anyone who wants a fully custom piece.
