Four chain styles, four completely different looks. Here's how to tell them apart and pick the right one.
Oval links with a bar running through the center of each one, originally a nautical design (the bar reinforced the link against strain, the same idea used in ship anchor chains). Reads as classic and slightly vintage, with texture and dimension rather than a flat, smooth surface. A solid middle-weight option: sturdy without being as heavy or bold as a cuban link.
A repeating pattern: one longer oval link followed by two or three shorter ones, then repeat. Originally an Italian design, and still the most recognizable "classic gold chain" pattern. Sits relatively flat, works well solo or with a pendant, and reads as timeless rather than trend-driven. See how men style silver jewelry for pairing ideas.
Flattened, interlocking links twisted to lie edge to edge, producing a bold, chunky, uniform look with almost no gaps between links. The most durable of the four styles, and the one that reads as a statement piece even at a moderate width. Heavier by design, which also means more metal, and typically a higher price at larger widths as a result.
Elongated, rectangular links that resemble an actual paperclip shape, giving a cleaner, more minimalist look than the other three. A newer trend relative to mariner, figaro, and cuban, all of which have decades of history behind them. Thinner paperclip chains sit closer to fashion jewelry territory; thicker ones hold up as a genuine daily-wear piece.
Find Your Chain
For a bold, statement piece worn alone: cuban. For something classic that works with or without a pendant: figaro. For texture and a bit of vintage character: mariner. For a clean, minimal look that reads more fashion-forward: paperclip. Pairing with a bracelet? Match the link style for a coordinated look; see our men's bracelet size guide for sizing across all four. If you're deciding between metals as well as styles, see sterling silver vs gold chain.
Related: for two other distinct chain profiles, see herringbone vs snake chain.
All four styles are low maintenance. Handle by the clasp, store flat or hanging depending on the piece, and follow standard tarnish care for the metal itself; see our jewelry care guide.
AURÉV works in solid 18K and 14K gold and sterling silver across these chain styles, never plated. Shop men's chains or start a bespoke commission.
