Fast fashion jewelry looks fine for a few months, then fails. Here's how to tell what you're actually buying.
Most men's jewelry sold online isn't fine jewelry. It's fashion product; made fast, priced low, built to be replaced. That's fine, if you know that's what you're buying. The problem is when it's marketed as if it's the same thing as solid gold or silver. It isn't.
Fine jewelry is solid metal through and through: 18K or 14K gold, or sterling silver (925). Fast fashion jewelry is usually base metal, brass or zinc alloy, with a thin plated layer on top. Terms like "gold vermeil" or "gold-filled" are a step up from basic plating, but still not solid gold.
The plated layer wears through in weeks to months. Once it does, it won't polish back. There's no more gold to reveal.
Check this first: does the listing say "solid," or does it say "plated," "vermeil," or "gold-tone"? Each is a different product.
Solid gold and sterling silver have a material cost floor set by the metal itself. A "gold" chain under $30 USD is not solid gold. But some sellers price plated jewelry as though it were solid, betting buyers won't ask. The reliable check is whether the exact metal composition is stated plainly, not the price tag.
Fine jewelry carries a hallmark: 750 for 18K gold, 585 for 14K gold, 925 for sterling silver. It's a manufacturing standard, usually stamped inside a ring band or on a clasp. Fast fashion jewelry generally isn't hallmarked, because there's no purity claim behind it to certify.

Plated jewelry commonly causes irritation once the base metal is exposed, since cheaper alloys often contain nickel. Solid gold and sterling silver rarely do, especially at higher purities. If a chain has ever turned your skin green, that's the base metal.
Solid metal can also be professionally polished and restored indefinitely. Plated jewelry can't. Once the layer wears through, the piece is done.
